The One

“What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?” – Luke 15:4

The One

“Out in the desert they wander,
Hungry and helpless and cold;
Off to the rescue he hastens,
Bringing them back to the fold.”

– Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd

When I reflect on the symbolism of the one lost sheep that Jesus was referring to in his parable, I picture the wandering sheep alone, bloodied, weak, and desperate. As I reflect on my own life as that lost sheep, it wasn’t always obvious who the rescuers were, and in my darkest moments it was the Christ from the heavens who fed me in that desert, that kept me going until I was found. He may not be wandering with us on earth, but we are still his sheep, and he will still come to our rescue.
